1) Chickens can not taste spicy things. They lack capsaicin receptors which is what tells us things are spicy. Feeding red pepper flakes to them can change the yoke color appearance and aids in fighting off bacterial infections.
2) Chickens refuse to show weakness or pain. Chickens will peck at each other; even draw blood or kill! The pecking order is a real thing and it doesn’t pay to be at the bottom.
3) When chickens sun bathe they sometimes contort their bodies in funny ways and almost look dead.
4) They are closely related to dinosaurs. Mainly the t-Rex!
5) Hens communicate with their chicks while in the egg.
6) They can’t see in the dark, but have better color vision then humans.
7) Eggs can only be laid every 24-26 hours. If there is less then 12 hours of light she might even lay at all.
8) There are more chickens in the world than people. A 4:1 ratio.
9) Hens move or rotate their eggs to keep the embryos from sticking to the side. A broody hen will stay with her eggs until hatched sometimes even starving herself.
10) Chickens are prone to drowning. As chicks, they can easily drown from drinking or accidently getting water in their lungs leading to pneumonia then death, sadly. ☠️ They can swim but need to be able to exit quickly.
